NYPHA'09 Nominations

I am happy to say I have been included it the large list of Nominations for the 2009 New York Photo Awards. I have been accepted into two categories, Advertising Series for my Microsoft I'm a PC work and Student Fine Art Series for a series of images on Beijing I made this past August. I'll update this page with an image from that series soon.

Last year I had fun going through the list of nominations and linking to their portfolio pages. This year I think there are way too many with almost 300 nominations! So, until I get an intern I'll let you google them this time.

If you going to be around this weekend let me know I would love to run into people at the festival. I am not sure how much of it I can make since I have a very busy weekend with Graduation on Friday! but you should check out the festival's schedule here.

NYPHA'09 Nominations
The Jury of the New York Photo Awards 2009 (NYPHA'09) is pleased to announce the following Nominees.

To be named a nominee of the New York Photo Awards 2009 means that one has been selected for the final round of judging, during which time only three finalists will be chosen (Winner and two Honorable Mentions). Considering the number of rounds that the Jury has already been through, being nominated is truly an award in and of itself. We are very proud of this year’s Nominees. It is clear that they represent the Future of Contemporary Photography, and we wish them continued success.

The Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced (and their work presented) at the Gala Ceremony for the New York Photo Awards 2009 on Friday, May 15th at 8pm in the St. Ann’s Warehouse Auditorium. This is a special ticketed event, there are only 415 seats, and they are selling out fast. Last year, we packed the place to the gills, and still had another 200+ people flowing out to the streets. So, if you want a seat, you have to have a ticket. Festival passes and tickets can be purchased here.

Brooklyn Doorbells

Recently, one cold night I found my doorbell had frozen over. I guess the night before it was raining or melting and then it all froze over. I took this pic to remember the freeze of that night and the nights to come. Its been a cold winter up here more like the winters of high school. One year I remember all of central park froze over is this amazing sheet of ice several inches thick. Several teachers were hurt trying to enter the park to bust students for smoking. After school we would steel cafeteria trays and ride them on the hills.

New York based photographer, Kai McBride, hauled an 8x10 view camera around brooklyn in 2005 photographing Brooklyn Doorbell much like my frozen doorbell above. I wonder what a 8x10 image of a surface like this looks like in a proper print. I quite enjoy Kai's latest project Facing Tampa which riffs on the real estate advertising so ubiquitous around Florida.

Back in New York and all that

I'm finally back in New York and almost recovered from the August world tour. In August I went from Brooklyn to Paris, London Cape Town, Johannesburg back to Brooklyn for a week and then 10 days in Beijing with stopovers in the Narita International Airport and a night in Los Angeles. Now I have just about cough my breath and the i remembered this blog...

I promise I will get back into some posting soon. Speaking of posting has anyone read up on this Jill Greenburg fiasco?

DJ Disco Wiz, (born Luis Cedeño), is credited with being the first Latino DJ in Hip-Hop music. Wiz is also credited for being the first DJ to create a "mixed plate" in 1977 (hip-hop’s first mixed dub recording) when he and Caz combined sound bites, special effects and paused beats. The creator of The Hip-Hop Meets Spoken Wordz Series, a hip-hop and poetry performance series that gives a voice to up and coming Latino talent in New York City, Wiz has performed as a poet at the Apollo Theater and the landmark Nuyorican Poets Cafe. A major contributor to the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington, Wiz is also a board member of the Universal Federation for the Preservation of Hip Hop Culture, chaired by Afrika Bambaataa of the Universal Zulu Nation. I am exhausted, spent and still unfinished with my final projects for the School year but I have to go to this for a bit tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing the final images in printed form. So far, I have only viewed Greiner's work on his website and his blog.

FALLEN PARADISE — William Greiner
May 1 — June 27

OPENING RECEPTION: May 1, 6pm — 8pm

This is the underbelly of pre-Katrina New Orleans. Greiner presents an image of a city that was already devastated, by neglect and abandonment, long before natural disaster struck. His imaging of New Orleans' urban vernacular is perceptively pictured through a carefully constructed use of color, form and content.

William Greiner's modus operandi is the American Color Tradition — the snapshot that isn't. Here, the familiar becomes unfamiliar. The seemingly objective actuality of the city, its banality, its ordinary everyday impression, is transformed into a vista of flush saturated palettes of color. Born, raised and (until Katrina) living and working in the city, New Orleans has always been an importnt source of inspiration for Greiner's work.

Here, a decade of looking and picturing his immediate environment, is brought together and displayed for the first time. Fallen Paradise is a celebration of apparent incidental imagery that is, of course, abound in formal devices — frame, vantage point, shape and line. Although there exists an autobiographical subtext, Greiner is most successful in compelling us to also look, not just at his city, but at the photograph itself. Whilst the importance of his subject does not disappear, these images function as photographic artifact — at once, they are observation and cultural object.

William Geiner lives and works in Baton Roughe, Louisiana.

I have been meaning to write about Art Basel Miami Beach 2008 here since I got back on Monday but I have been neck deep in finals so that will have to wait until Wednesday. I will however post a interesting interview I just happened upon (see above).

Miami to Brooklyn

No, I am not talking about the electro song but it will be part of the sound track as I move.

So, as some of you already know... I have finally thrown in the towel and I am leaving Miami and Crispin Porter + Bogusky where I have worked as a Photographer for the past year and a half and before that a Digital Artist for 3 years and I am going back to School to pursue a MFA in Photography from School of Visual Arts. It is very hard leaving a place with so many great people and great memories attached to it but I have been itching to do this for some time now and I can't wait to get started.

I have to thank SVA Graduate Photography AlumsAmy Stein and Matthew Baum for their advise and insight.

Stay classy Miami I will miss you but I will be back regularly. Now back to packing...
