From the Photographic Resource Center (PRC):

Each year, the PRC is pleased to host a juried exhibition with a nationally-renowned juror. This prestigious competition is a great opportunity to view new work as well as see topics in which contemporary minds are engaged. With only about a dozen artists selected from close to 300 entries, the PRC Juried Exhibition is a highly competitive and revered program. All winners exhibit several images each in the PRC gallery.

Guest jurors represent esteemed curators, photographers, and professionals from the region and beyond. As each juror brings a different perspective, the show is unique and fresh every year. Past guest jurors of the PRC Juried Exhibition have included Mia Fineman, Russell Hart, Lesley A. Martin, Jen Bekman, Jeanine Fijol, Alison Devine Nordstrom, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, Chris Enos, Diana Gaston, Deborah Martin Kao, Richard Woodward, and Edward Earle, among others.

In celebration of the PRC's 30th anniversary in 2006, and to reflect the mission and function of our annual photography competition, we changed the name of the PRC Members' Exhibition to EXPOSURE: The Annual PRC Juried Exhibition.

The Brief Happy Life of Workshop Workshop, with Pooper and Pizza Dog
Thursday, December 3, 2009 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Design Miami, NE 39th Street & 1st Court

The Brief Happy Life of Workshop Workshop
Design Miami/ 2009

Workshop Workshop, a factory and salon created by artist Jim Drain, poet P. Scott Cunningham, and sculptor Graham Hudson, produces zines that respond to Design/Miami itself—its participants, objects, conversations, histories, narratives, belief systems and forms. Even the detritus of the tent’s construction has been put to use by Hudson, who is in the act of constructing the space using remnant lumber, rubber, plastic, furniture—anything the fair and the city (the larger fair) has cast off.

In Workshop Workshop, physical and metaphysical byproducts are recycled and put to use, creating an environment, a process, and a series of works that reflect the intense interchange that occurs in Miami each December, and creates a locus for collaboration.

Drain, Cunningham and Hudson will draw from a rotating—and ever-expanding—crew of local and international artists, designers and writers, in order to produce as many zines as it can during the length of fair, with as diverse a range of content as possible.

zine [zeen]
1. An abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine
2. A handmade journal, with small circulation and hyperlocal aesthetics, that maximizes the two-dimensional intersection of image and text, using both original and appropriated content.
3. Any self-published work of minority interest reproduced via photocopier.

Completed zines cost $5.00 each or can be bartered for intellectual property.

Proceeds will be donated to two local non-profits, Bas Fisher Invitational, an artist-run exhibition space, and the University of Wynwood, a literature advocacy organization.

Opening, Thursday December 3rd, 2009
NW 26th Street & 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL

AN OUTDOOR MURAL PROJECT PRODUCED BY DEITCH PROJECTS AND GOLDMAN PROPERTIES

Fifteen influential artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States have been invited to create outdoor murals on the warehouse walls of Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties, one of the major property owners in Wynwood, has made available a group of walls and buildings for artists to work on, concentrated in the area between 2nd and 5th Avenues and NW 22nd and 28th Streets. The project also includes an indoor space at 2550 NW 2nd Avenue where paintings by several of the artists and documentary photographs by Martha Cooper will be exhibited.

The Wynwood Walls project will build on the tradition of street art already established in the neighborhood to create a more tightly curated outdoor exhibition. In addition to the twelve murals to be completed for the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2009, the intention is to commission another fifteen or more wall murals over the next two years. The goal is to sponsor the creation of a group of outdoor murals by the best artists in the field that will become an international street art museum.

The artists in the first phase of The Wynwood Walls are: Aiko from Japan, Os Gemeos and Nunca from Brazil, Stelios Faitakis from Greece, and Jim Drain, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Barry McGee, Ara Peterson, Clare Rojas, Kenny Scharf and the team of Swoon, David Ellis and Ben Wolf from the United States. Futura is one of the most influential street artists of all time, one of the originators of Wild Style in the early 1980s. Kenny Scharf’s work opened a new direction in art in the early 1980s and continues to influence a younger generation. Os Gemeos introduced a new approach to street art in Brazil in the 1990s and has influenced artists around the world. Os Gemeos will be bring several artist friends from Brazil including Nina and Finok who will collaborate on their mural, which will cover the building at the corner of NW 2nd Avenue and NW 26th Street. Barry McGee, from San Francisco, whose work will also cover an entire building, at 2390 NW 2nd Avenue, introduced a new artistic vocabulary mixing figuration and geometry that has also been widely influential. Shepard Fairey and Swoon have become among the best known American artists of their generation through their art on the street. Jim Drain and Ara Peterson, both formerly members of the influential Providence collective Forcefield, continue to develop new approaches to artistic media. Jim Drain is now living in Miami and has become central figure in the local art community. Clare Rojas is also a musician performing as Peggy Honeywell and brings a folk art sensibility to both her art and music. Aiko’s work encompasses the imagery of Japanese Pop.

The Wynwood Walls will also include a special project by Shepard Fairey at 2700 NW 2nd Avenue between NW 27th Street and NW 27th Terrace, produced by Christian Strike and Country Club, presented in conjunction with the Miami Art Museum and the Fountainhead Residency. Fairey will also unveil a banner project at the Miami Art Museum.

Friday, December 4th: 10am – 10pm
Saturday, December 5th: 10am – 10pm
Sunday, December 6th: 10am – 6pm

Kevin Arrow | Alex Cardenas | Clifton Childree | Jessica Dickinson | Harlan Erskine | "Freegums" aka Alvaro Ilizarbe | Frederico Nessi | Rebecca Schiffman | Francine Spiegel | Jen Stark | Mike Taylor | Jonathan Thomas

The Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI), an artist-run, alternative arts space in Miami's Design District, is throwing a cupcakes and cocktails soiree to mark its 5-year anniversary and portfolio premiere on November 12, from 7-10 p.m. “Wow We Have Come This Far” features exclusive, limited-edition prints exploring silk-screen, giclée, photography and etching, among other mediums, by 12 BFI alumni artists.

Attendees will be treated to deejayed tunes by BFI organizers Naomi Fisher, Jim Drain and Kathryn Marks, with the added pleasure of knowing their $50 ticket goes toward future programming and events.

Founded in Summer 2004, the BFI has hosted 30 exhibitions, many of which have launched the careers of emerging artists: Francine Speigel went on to show with Deitch Projects in New York; Jessica Dickinson and Alejandro Cardenas are represented by James Fuentes, an edgy, downtown New York gallery; and Jen Stark, Alvaro Ilizarbe and Clifton Childree are among Miami's most respected talent.

In gratitude for their success, these portfolio artists contributed to raise funds and ensure support for the next generation. All ticket and print sales go toward matching the Knight Arts Challenge grant awarded to the BFI from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. This matching grant provides funds to maintain year-round programming including exhibitions, lectures, community outreach and artist residencies in association with the Fountainhead Residency, as a nonprofit, non-commercial venue under the umbrella of the Dade Community Foundation, a 501c3. The Knight Arts Challenge is a $40 million initiative to bring the South Florida community together through the arts.

The BFI was created by Naomi Fisher and Hernan Bas (now managed by Fisher, Jim Drain, Agatha Wara and Kathryn Marks). I donated the piece above from my series "ten convenient stores" titled: ‘#10545.’ it is a 20 x 30 inch c-print mounted onto plexiglass I made in 2005.
http://www.harlanerskine.com/tencstores-3.php

Here is how it works:
There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. By purchasing a ticket to the event, each attendee is entered in a raffle. Over one hundred emerging and established artists will donate artwork for the raffle = enough so that each attendee is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is fun way to place artwork into a collection, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

Please find a list of donating artists below. We have great work this year and will preview the artworks for Locust Projects members on October 29th.

Opening Tonight, EDWARD BURTYNSKY - OIL at HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER's new space

Edward Burtynsky, at Hasted Hunt Kraeutler
SOCAR Oil Fields #6, Baku, Azerbaijan, Digital Chromogenic Color Print, 48 x 72 inches, Limited Edition of 6

I looking forward to tonight's opening of Edward Burtynsky's new body of work, Oil. Tonight is also the first showing in for HASTED HUNT under their new name HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER in their new space on ground level on 24th Street. Their new space is the former location of Charles Cowles Gallery which also used to represent Burtynsky in New York.

Charles Cowles was always super supportive of my work. In 2006 he purchased a piece from my series ten convenient stores and soon after included it in a large donation to the Miami Art Museum. I'm sad to see his Gallery go but I am sure he will remain active in the art world and I'm looking forward to seeing what HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER has in store for us.

From the press release:

HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER is pleased to announce the exclusive representation of Edward Burtynsky in the United States.

HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER opens with "Edward Burtynsky: Oil". The exhibition runs from October 1 until November 28, 2009 with an artist's reception on Tuesday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. "Oil" consists of a series of large format color images made over the last 12 years. Burtynsky's obsession with oil began in 1997, when he identified oil as a key building block of the last century - politically, economically and socially - on a global scale. He has tracked this controversial, valuable and increasingly scarce resource from extraction to production to consumption. His obsession with oil has taken him from oil fields to expressways, from Western Canada to Los Angeles to the Middle East.

The New York exhibition at HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER is presented in conjunction with the publication and release of the artist's new monograph "Edward Burtynsky: Oil" (Steidl 2009) and a major museum show at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which will run contemporaneously.

The artist continues to capture, within his work, the brutal interaction between man and the environment in the production of oil with massive fields and huge refineries. Our enormous consumption is witnessed in huge matrix-like expressways and dumping grounds for tires. The impact and scale of Burtynsky's work is sizable. He works with a sensibility and appreciation of nature that is contemporary, yet in the tradition of Carleton Watkins and Timothy O'Sullivan.

In his essay for the new monograph, Paul Roth, Curator of Photography and Media Arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art offers,

"This is a new form of epic history painting. Turning his camera lens to a fever dream, Burtynsky forges a new mythology for the 21st century from the lexicon of realism. With stunning detail, from improbable perches, in strange and beautiful colors, these pictures show their subjects with clinical accuracy, and with definitive force. But they also tell a parallel and more inchoate tale: a critique of civilization, and a foretelling of human ends."

"Edward Burtynsky: Oil" is the artist's fourth book following "Edward Burtynsky: Quarries" (Steidl 2007), "Edward Burtynsky: China".(Steidl 2005) and "Manufactured Landscapes: The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky" (National Gallery of Canada, in association with Yale University Press 2003). The photographer was the subject of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning documentary film, "Manufactured Landscapes" that was shown at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

That same year, Mr. Burtynsky was named Officer of the Order of Canada. He is the recipient of three honorary doctorates, and the esteemed TED prize, the Rencontres d'Arles Outreach award, as well as the Roloff Beny Book award. He is a finalist for The Financial Times Prix Pictet, to be announced in November 2009. He chairs the board of directors of the high profile online sustainability magazine Worldchanging, and sits on the board of CONTACT, the international festival of photography in Toronto, where he is based.

Mr. Burtynsky has exhibited internationally and has work in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Victoria & Albert, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Reina Sofia, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among other esteemed institutions.

Opening Tonight: Naomi Fisher, The Brave Keep Undefiled A Wisdom Of Their Own

Miami to New York! Tonight Miami native and friend is coming up for her opening at Leo Koenig. I'll be there and many others. Also, as mentioned in a previous post, Leo Koenig is having some sort of art pot luck next door.

Leo Koenig, Inc.
545 West 23rd Street, 212-334-9255
Chelsea
Leo Koening website

September 18 - October 24, 2009
Opening: Friday, September 18, 6 - 8 PM

Leo Koenig Inc. is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Naomi Fisher entitled "The Brave Keep Undefiled Wisdom of Their Own." With this exhibition, Fisher strives to explore the reciprocal relationship between the force of nature and its tendency towards chaos as it stands in opposition to the order and structure of civilization and culture. It is an investigation through movement, landscape costume and adornment.

Figuring most significantly in this new series of photographs, videos and drawings, are the women depicted in the images. Some of these women have been photographed by the artist for over a decade, and are all trained dancers and performers whose personal visions parallel those of Ms. Fisher's. Other intrinsic elements of inspiration for the exhibition came from the location (Oleta State Park), and a chance happening of what can only be described as the "Garage Sale of a Lifetime" where the artist stumbled upon the sale of the contents of an unpaid storage unit in Miami. There, Fisher amassed 3 garbage bags full of clothes that ended up containing vintage Versace.

"Camp Primitivo" was the name which was given to Fisher's "bubble world," and leopard print was their uniform. Oleta State Park, is on an island in Biscayne Bay between North Miami Beach and the City of Miami. Truly hidden in plain site, the park has miles of mangroves, forests and beaches nestled between metropolis and ocean. Life there was basic, food, beach, insect repellent, sleep, cook dinner over a campfire, drink, dance, thunderstorm, scream, repeat. The resulting images convey an atmosphere of spontaneous expression tinged with just a bit of mystery. The women, clad in their leopard-print and sequined outfits, exude an impulsive and unguarded playfulness, while at the same time leaving the viewer with the feeling that they might never really know the whole story.

Growing up in Miami and traveling abroad while her botanist father collected and studied tropical plants has given Ms. Fisher a unique perspective to recontextualize the modernist fascination with the tropics and the "wild" women for whom the jungle is their natural habitat. The images in this exhibition are a culmination of a project where the artist invited four women to camp with her and shoot for 9 days straight. The intimacy is apparent in the images. For the duration of the project each performer was able to tap into a reservoir of darkness and emotion which was effortlessly communicated with humor and abandon. Likewise, the artist's direction became an intuitive, and organic process. This seamless reciprocal gesture could only be the result of years of familiarity and collaboration.

Naomi Fisher is an artist born and raised in Miami. Fisher has exhibited internationally in such venues as the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev; Halle fur Kunst, Luneburg; Kemper Museum, Kansas City; Kunsthalle Wein, Vienna; Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel; Deste Foundation, Athens; and the New Museum, NY. Fisher graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1998, and is a recipient of a 2008 Knight Arts Challenge Grant from the John and James L. Knight Foundation. She also co-founded and jointly runs the Bas Fisher Invitational, an artist run alternative art space in Miami.

The artist would like to thank Jacqueline Fritz, Nancy Garcia, Jessie Gold, Elizabeth Hart, and Nikki Rollason for their inspiring performances.

EAT WELL BRING FOOD
Potluck Dinners every Tuesday & Saturday Eve

The metaphors linking food and art are abundant. They persist: the ideas of sustenance versus subsistence, to satiate concomitant with nourishment, to simply serve, or to present. Don't Perish posits the independent creativity of the artist within the anomaly of an inventive community. Don't Perish is an exchange suggested as an exhibition:

"We want to live with work we like, work we are curious about, work we have the chance to eat dinner with if we put it into a group show that incorporates tables, chairs, and food. In order to understand the work, get to know it, we invite our friends and strangers to look at the work with us over a meal."

Montgomery and Willenbring have done this before. Rose Colored Glasses was mounted at Passerby in 2008. That exhibition shared the same impetus as Don't Perish, which was and is, a desire to experience works of art in a setting that provides an alternative to the passive viewing parameters usually encountered when visiting a gallery. There was and is the intention that the participant will find sustained albeit earned nourishment in the work as well as the meals. In addition to the individual works providing stimulus, the context provided by the visual storage and organization of non-perishable food throughout the gallery inspires another level of sightlines, interruptions, jumps in conversation and information that keeps perspective un-fixed.

Abstract and conceptual works lend themselves particularly well to durational viewing. When considering pieces for the exhibition, Montgomery and Willenbring specifically chose works by artists that combine rigor and formalist underpinnings, with an understated yet sublime beauty. They have grouped an unexpected bevy of artists into a space activated by dinner-time conversations puzzling the connections and discovering the complements.

At the core of this exhibition is the emphasis on responsibility. Montgomery and Willenbring are creating a pantry within the gallery for food the visitor donates to the Food Bank of New York*. They ask the diners to bring food to share to the table when they come to dinner. Montgomery and Willenbring are bringing food to the neighborhood by hosting a farm stand on Saturdays.

Each artwork will also initiate queries on responsibility through its language of abstraction, investigate the necessity or uselessness of interpretation, and weigh the burden or enlightenment of context.

Joseph Montgomery and Jesse Willenbring are artists that live and work in New York City.
Joseph Montgomery holds a BA from Yale University and both he and Jesse Willenbring hold MFA's from Hunter College.

With many thanks to the generous loans from Paula Copper, Martin and Rebecca Eisenberg, Steve Henry, The Hall Collection and Jack Tilton.

Fall gallery hours will be Thursday through Saturdays 10-6, (Tuesdays and Wednesdays by appointment). Please contact Elizabeth Balogh or Nicole Russo for further information and/or visuals.

*Non-perishable food items may be donated during gallery hours.

Dinners will be held on;
September 19th, September 22nd, September 26th, September 29th, October 3rd, October 6th, October 10th, October 13th, October 17th.

First Openings of the Fall Art Season 2009

I hope that last week's openings are a sign of the upcoming quality of future fall openings because that would make this a exciting art season (f' a recession!).

Last Thursday SoHo was a buzz with three big openings. Davis Rhodes at Team Gallery, Kehinde Wiley at Deitch Projects on Grand Street and Tauba Auerbach at Deitch Projects's Wooster Street space.

I walked into the Davis Rhodes first not really knowing what to expect. The gallery space was fairly crowded but you could still see the artwork. Rhodes minimalist paintings heavily referenced sign advertising production as well as sculpture and minimal painting traditions. Not really very exciting for me. He made solid pain fields on vinyl material with a large shape cut from the center. Each piece was then loosely hung creating a sculptural effect. I feel like I may be the wrong person to really give these painting their fair shake but I left that gallery board - flat color felt exactly that, flat boring. I crave some thread of detail or narrative to get excited with, this just didn't work for me.

The next stop was Kehinde Wiley's new show. Barely a half block down Grand Street at Dietch's smaller space; Wiley was showing a collection of expertly produced photographs and one large painting in the front room of the gallery. These photographs add nicely to Wiley's overture of highly realistic paintings.

Each image fits his aesthetic but exists in photographic space rather then the surface of a additive painted canvas. The poses still heavily borrow from painting but the clarity of the photographic production is striking and I thought the effect created from bringing slices of the background inform of the subject created a nice dimension to the work that reminded me of painting and less of photography.

From the Press Release:

September 03, 2009 - September 26, 2009
76 Grand Street, New York

Deitch Projects is pleased to present Black Light, an exhibition of photographs by Kehinde Wiley that thrusts the black male image, captured by means of light manipulation and digital technology, into focus. This shuffle of Wiley's artistic process reveals an integral component of his studio practice rarely seen while remaining, uniquely, Kehinde Wiley portraiture.

Enlisting the technical tenor of Hype Williams' hip-hop videos from the 90's, Wiley saturates his consummately styled subjects of Fulton Street Mall pedigree- caps flipped backward, wearing gear of New York legend- in "super rapturous light". To transcendental and beatific effect, such illumination proffers a new measure of Wiley's technical abilities, so that the medium of photography propels each figure to the point before paint consumes canvas- the moment when flesh, at its three dimensional, truth-telling, reveals scars long ago enacted. Browned fingernails, questioning red-glazed eyes and voluptuously glossed, cigarette-charred lips heighten what, for some, is no longer visible: a vulnerable microcosm of our metropolis- a black light. Through the 17 photographs on display, Wiley produces an intimate study of embattled psychologies whose adherents are at once flawed and majestic, canonized and misunderstood.

The exhibition Black Light will be accompanied by, Black Light, a full-color book published by Powerhouse and will be available at Deitch Projects

Lastly I walked around the corner to the airy Wooster Street space where Tauba Auerbach was showing paintings, photography and a performance on a organ she helped create with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. When you enter the gallery you are greeted with several large abstract photographs. In the center of the space there is a large wood two person custom made organ called the Auerglass. Behind the organ were several lager paintings from different series she has been working on, nicely reflecting the photographic abstractions shown at the entrance of the gallery.

From the Press release:

September 03, 2009 - October 17, 2009
18 Wooster Street, New York

The collapsing of two conflicting states is the central theme of HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE, Tauba Auerbach's new exhibition at Deitch Projects. The artist deliberately composed the title as an anagram. The paintings, photographic works, sculpture and the musical instrument that comprise the show are all structured around the threshold between order and randomness. The philosophical conflicts explored in the work include:

The liminality, or intermediate state between two dimensionality and three dimensionality.

The past and the present.

A combination of the two: a past three-dimensional state and a present two-dimensional state.

Being HERE vs. Being THERE, and being both HERE and THERE at once.

Randomness vs. Determinism and the unpredictable order of chaos.

In the marrying of two conflicting states, the work is also about the number 2, a concept that is inherent in the remote interdependence central to the sculptural works in the exhibition.

There are five bodies of work represented in the exhibition:

Crumple Paintings

The next generation of the Crumple paintings previously shown in Deitch Projects' Constraction exhibition last summer and in the New Museum's Younger Than Jesus. These new works have been created for the large space of Deitch's 18 Wooster Street gallery and require that the viewer stand far back from the work to perceive the illusion of a crumpled surface constructed from large Ben Day dots.

Static Photographs

A new series of more representational, but still undecipherable Static photographs. They focus less on the emergence of pattern as in the previous series, also shown in Younger Than Jesus, and more on the emergence of form. They address the question of what makes something "something."

Fold Paintings

A series of incrementally sized fold paintings, painted on raw canvas with an industrial paint sprayer. They explore the merging of a past three-dimensional state with a present two-dimensional state.

A sculpture that is half inside the gallery and half outside of it.

There will be a form resembling a black orb hanging from the gallery facade. It will blow in the breeze. Inside the gallery, there will be a light source dangling from a thin rod, moving around exactly the same way as the form outside. The sculpture is based on the phenomenon of entangled particles, two particles that, when separated from one another, continue to behave identically, even at a great distance. If you stimulate one, the other reacts too. It is as though they are supernaturally connected.

The Auerglass

The Auerglass, which is the central work in the show, is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. The Auerglass will be played at the opening on September 3rd, as a prelude to a Glasser performance at 8pm on September 11th, and daily at 5pm from Tuesday through Saturday during the exhibition. Ida Falck Oien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

The highlight of the openings was the Auerglass performance. I highly recommend trying to catch the performance for yourself. It begins is a very amateurish tone. Sounding exactly as it was promised like a child's composition and really reminded me heavily of my own fumblings as a child trying to play piano. The piece then progresses into a crescendo of sound that washed over the audience a great ending. It was as if the artist's composition was also about them learning music and learning to play their invented instrument. The piece was about their very learning of music itself. starting off in the childhood composition of Auerbach and ending in the musical adultness of the new Glasser material.

I found some youtube footage of the concert check it out below. If you look carefully you can se me bopping my head.

Soho, Manhattan, New York City, Thursday, September 3, 2009.
Per New York Times:
"Wear your new statement accessories to Deitch Projects tonight for two big openings. Tara Auerbachs Crumple paintings mimic creased paper with patterns of Benday dots that can be dizzying when seen up close, writes Karen Rosenberg. But most of the focus will be on an The Auerglass, a wooden pump organ that the artist and the band Glasser will play at the reception."

On Saturday, I trekked out to see the Creative Time installations on Governor's Island called PLOT09: This World & Nearer Ones. I was only able to see a few of the shows but their quality was fantastic. Here are some of my highlights from Creative Times' TV:

Lawrence Weiner discuss his work in PLOT/09: This World & Nearer Ones entitled "AT THE SAME MOMENT"

Mark Walling discusses his work in PLOT/09 This World & Nearer Ones, entitled," Ferry".

Krzysztof Wodiczko discusses his work in PLOT/09: This World & Nearer Ones entitled "Veterans' Flame"

Anthony McCall discusses his work in PLOT/09: This World & Nearer Ones entitled "Between You and I"

And lastly, I caught the last showing of the night of The Bruce High Quality Foundation's "Isle of the Dead" Movie. This was the surprise of the afternoon. Really nicely made 18 minute site specific motion picture. With much of the final climax of the film taking place in the theater you are viewing the movie in. The theater is an old relic from when the Island was a Coast Guard base and Used to show first run movies when the base was operational. the haunting effect of watching a chorus of 200 zombies sing "Summer of '69" by Brian Adams was haunting and nostalgic at the same time. I'm still thinking about this movie and the fantastic sound production. If you want to listen to their song you can on The Bruce High Quality Foundation's webpage to the middle right.

Art Show in Portland at the Newspace Center for Photography

Newspace Center for Photography - Portland, Oregon

My friend Jacqueline Bates has been included in this juried show opening tonight in Portland, OR. If you live there or are in town be sure to check it out. If you miss the opening it will be up until August 30th.

Jacqueline Bates Photography

Newspace Center for Photography - Portland, Oregon
2009 Juried Exhibition

August 7th through 30th 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, August 7th 7-10pm

Newspace Center for Photography is pleased to present its Fifth Annual Juried Exhibition this August. This year's exhibition was curated by Chris Pichler, founder of fine photography book publisher Nazraeli Press. Based in Portland, Nazraeli Press has published over 250 books specializing in contemporary photography to date.

From over 300 entries and about 1,500 individual images, Mr. Pichler selected five photographers to exhibit five images each.

Tricia Hoffman has been selected to receive $500 and a solo show in 2010 at the Center. Congratulations Tricia!

This year's selections include:

Joe Sumner
Joe Sumner studied photography in college in the 1970's but put it aside to work as a U.S. Forest Service Hotshot, National Park Service Ranger, and Special Agent. Working outdoors, frequently at night, he came to feel at home with full moon and new moon skies and begain taking low light and night images in 2001.

Kevin G. Malella
Kevin G. Malella lives in Chicago, IL. He recently finished his MFA at Columbia College Chicago ('09). He is a recent recipient of a Harold Arts Residency, John Mulvany Scholarship, Albert P. Weisman Grant, and the Society of Photographic Educators' Jeannie Pierce Award.

Christine Laptuta
Christine Laptuta's images are continuous frames on long strips of film shot with a primitive Holga camera. The camera's unpredictability has enabled Laptuta to tap into a more intuitive and spontaneous shooting style. Born in Toronto, Christine now lives and works in Portland. Her work is in public and private collections and she has shown both nationally and internationally.

Jacqueline Bates
New York City-based photographer Jacqueline Bates was born in Mount Kisco, New York and raised in Connecticut. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004 and Master of Fine Arts in 2009 from the School of Visual Arts. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in New York, Paris, Moscow, and Buenos Aires. Opening tomorrow, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood: Abracadabra: Second Annual Fundraising Art Exhibition and Raffle

Tomorrow is the opening of Abracadabra: Second Annual Fundraising Art Exhibition and Raffle at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, FL. I have donated the image below at a special artist proof size - 6" wider then the final series size. This size print will not be editioned so this Artist Proof will be the only image at this larger size..

Unlike many other donations this raffle will be at the end of a longer exhibition of the collection of works. I hope to come down to FL soon to shoot on some images for my final Thesis project at school and hopefully I will be there in time for the show.

from the press release:
Opening reception: Thu., Jan. 22, 6 - 9 pm
Exhibition runs through Feb. 13, 2009
Raffle event: Fri., Feb. 13, 6 - 9 pm

Approximately 100 works in all media by outstanding South Florida artists and others are displayed for three weeks prior to being raffled off to ticket buyers at a wonderful soiree in the Center’s main gallery! Make plans now to preview these great artworks and attend this “fun” fund-raiser, where all raffle purchasers go home with a fantastic piece of art that might be worth thousands of dollars!
